This year, Davie County Schools has introduced a new grading framework (grades 3-12) designed to make grades more consistent, fair, and meaningful for students and families.

The idea behind the change is simple: a student's grade should clearly communicate what the student knows and is able to do.

Under the new framework, student work is organized into three categories that reflect the learning cycle:

• Preparation (Heavily Supported Practice) – Students are learning and practicing with help.

• Practice (More Independent Practice) – Students practice skills on their own as they build understanding and confidence.

• Performance (Demonstration of Mastery) – Students independently show what they have learned.

Because Performance shows what a student can do independently after instruction and practice, it carries the greatest weight in the student's grade.

The framework also recognizes that mistakes are a normal and important part of learning. Students should have opportunities to learn, practice, receive feedback, and improve before they are expected to demonstrate mastery.

Our goal is not to make grading easier or harder. Our goal is to make grades clearer and more consistent so that students and families have a better understanding of what a grade actually represents.
